Few moments in motherhood are as perfect and magical as carrying a sleep-heavy toddler from the car into his bed for a well-deserved nap. The sweet, sweaty little head, the sighs and snuggling in close. When Jonas is slipping off to sleep he actually smiles, and it’s the dreamiest picture ♥️
This gig is exhausting and grinding and wears you down a lot of the time, but I’m grateful for the heaviness too, because it’s what gives us purpose, adds meaning to our life. It’s hard, but that doesn’t mean we’re doing it wrong, and most of all it’s something of infinite value.
A long time ago I read something about how we trade in the weightlessness of freedom and carefree, detached living for families that bind us to each other and, inevitably, can weigh us down. But the weight is a grounding force that should give us purpose, move us forward, connect us in meaningful ways. It’s a weight we choose to carry because it’s worth it. And it’s why I’ll always jump at the opportunity to carry my sleeping toddler into the house.
A good friend of Andrew’s, (Celeste from Marriage Laboratory, they were dance partners back in the day! In my head we’re friends too, it feels like I know her between his college stories and her rocking posts & podcast on marriage!) recently published a piece entitled “Motherhood, a Sacred Weight” which sums up so beautifully what it means to be weighed down in the hardest AND best of ways.
